Our Inspiration

Real-life inspiration can come from various sources, and My Poor Feat’s origin is no exception.  A year before its inception, Albert had the opportunity to speak to and see one of the most devoted volunteers in the area, the late Sister Jean Webster, who fed Atlantic City's poor for decades.  Her story is one that everyone should learn from. She gave all she had. Even being poor and with medical issues herself, she never turned anyone away from a meal; and always referred to them all as not the poor and homeless, but “guests”.  One of her mantras as she explained and certainly lived by, was “never look down on another man unless you’re looking down to pick him up.”  The Matthews family and the volunteers at MPF try to echo that sentiment in all they do.

My Poor Feat originated with a family's vision of feeding the homeless and poor in our community.  It all began back in 2008, when Albert Matthews, father of 11 children, wanted find a way to give back to the community in a way that caters to his strengths, that is, through providing meals to those who need them. With children, relatives, and close friends who work in areas that cover the full array of expertise any business would need, My Poor Feat was born. We believe and try to show that anybody can do it, anyone can help give back and help to change things for the better.

Today, the family and volunteers including Albert and his brother Bill (Information Technologies Vice President), Mary (Secretary), Jonathan (Legal), Jim (Accounting), Peter (Engineering) and Thomas (Medical/Accounting), all volunteer and help as board members. Many others within the family, as well as many friends and periodic volunteers throughout the community, help My Poor Feat provide meals.
